This error usually occurs when your local game client completely loses communication with a specific server shard. It is a classic network handshake failure common during heavy traffic periods, where the server fails to pass your character off to the next zone. If you can log into your character without any issues but consistently get disconnected the exact second you click a waypoint, a map portal, or a zone entrance, you are likely dealing with a corrupted active instance. The server is stubbornly trying to route you to a broken shard, so you need to force a fresh one. From a Waypoint or Entrance: Approach the door or open your waypoint map layout. Hold down the Ctrl key and left-click the destination zone door or waypoint icon. Select "New": A small instance manager menu will pop up showing any active instances of that zone. Click the "New" button. This tells the server to completely drop the bugged shard and spin up a clean, unbugged instance for you to enter.
2. Bypass Character Login Loops via the Main MenuDuring peak hours, regional servers get overloaded, causing instance handshakes to drop frequently. If your default regional server is buckling under the pressure, manually routing your traffic to a different node can bypass the congested path entirely. Log out to the main login screen. Open the Gateway selection dropdown menu. Switch from your default option (e.g., Frankfurt or US DC) to a nearby stable alternative node (like choosing London or Stockholm if you are in Europe, or California if you are in the US). A very minor increase in your baseline ping is a small price to pay to get past broken instance routing.
4. Clear DNS Cache and Add Firewall ExceptionsCorrupted zone assets or missing data packets can cause your client to hang indefinitely while loading a new area. If the loading screen takes too long, the server assumes your game has timed out and drops the connection. On Steam: Go to your Steam Library → Right-click Path of Exile 2 → Select Properties → Go to Installed Files → Click Verify Integrity of Game Files. Let Steam automatically scan and re-download any missing or broken asset packets. On Standalone Client: Go into your core Path of Exile 2 installation folder and look for the PackCheck.exe utility. Right-click and run it as an administrator to scan and fix your local data files.
6. Toggle Graphics API or Use a VPNRoute via a VPN: If your local ISP is dropping the network traffic protocols used by the server shards, launching a high-quality VPN can route your traffic around the dead node entirely. Connect to a VPN location that is physically close to your target gateway region for the cleanest connection line.
